Now the phone it just don't ring
And the birds they always sing
As I open up my eyes to another day
And the grass still seems to grow
And a broken heart still knows
Of the seeds it holds inside
And has yet to sow

I've been down this road before
And if you ask me why I'm just not sure
It's the stars up in the sky
It's these silly alibis
That tell me I've been down this road

Now the kids go off to school
And they see that lonely fool
And they run and dance
They still play hide & seek
But the sky is lookin' wide
So their game winds up inside
Safe from the fire and the rain

It's a road I've traveled well
Just in case you can't tell

Now the day is fading fast
As I make it home at last
And I think about the day that's come and gone
But the nights are far too long
So I sit and write this song
